Hardwood flooring is one the most popular types of flooring in the West Columbia, Lexington & Irmo SC areas – and for good reason. When our flooring experts at Floor Coverings International Columbia West install a new hardwood floor in a client’s home, the result is nothing short of spectacular. That’s because hardwood flooring can add organic and timeless beauty while perfectly complementing any room.
It’s important to know that there are two main types of hardwood flooring: solid hardwood flooring and engineered hardwood flooring. Both are made of real wood and are visually stunning. However, there are some key differences.
Engineered Hardwood Flooring
Engineered hardwood flooring is made up of several wood layers in a cross-grain arrangement. The top layer is made of a veneer wood layer which is usually 1/16”-1/8” in thickness. Underneath are several layers of high-quality plywood. The cross-layered composition of these plywood layers give engineered hardwood flooring superior strength and durability. That’s why engineered hardwood flooring can be installed in practically any room of your house without worry of warping or bowing from water damage.
Solid Hardwood Flooring
Solid hardwood flooring is the au-natural of hardwood flooring. It’s cut from one solid piece of hardwood, usually ¾” in depth. One clear advantage of solid hardwood flooring is that it can be sanded down and refinished over and over. On the other hand, solid hardwood flooring cannot be installed below ground level because it can suffer damage from moisture issues.
Both engineered and solid hardwood come in a huge variety of species and colors. Our experts at Floor Coverings International Columbia West work directly with the top hardwood flooring manufacturers and can give you great advice on which type of hardwood floor is suitable for your home.
