High traffic areas are harder to maintain when it comes to flooring. The reason? All of the traipsing over these surfaces can wear down softer flooring options, such as carpet. Although there are carpets that work in high traffic areas, our flooring experts at Floor Coverings International Columbia West recommend the following three options.
Bamboo — Versatile, Strong, and Sustainable
Bamboo is not a tree, but grass, which is somewhat amazing considering that it has a stronger tinsel strength than steel. This means bamboo holds up under tension better than steel does. It also provides a hard surface without being uncomfortable. Bamboo is warm and insulating, and it stands up to heavy foot traffic. Like all flooring options in high traffic areas, extra sweeping is essential.
Tile — Porcelain or Ceramic
Tile is another good choice for high traffic areas. When installed correctly, tile is strong and durable. If there’s a downside to porcelain or ceramic tile, it’s that it doesn’t tolerate sudden compression events like dropping something heavy onto the surface. One of the best benefits of using tile is that it comes in an endless number of colors and patterns — even hand painted. Similar to bamboo, tile flooring must be cleaned regularly to maintain its finish. This means extra sweeping and cleaning up spills quickly.
Hardwood Floors — Friendly to your Feet and the Earth
Hardwood floors, when properly installed and cared for, last for hundreds of years. The benefit of hardwood floors is that they make excellent insulators. As such, they are warmer in winter and cooler in summer, and they help to keep your energy bill lower. Hardwood such as oak, walnut, and maple stand up to foot traffic just fine. Like both bamboo and tile flooring, hardwood needs cleaning regularly and mopping as needed. Spills need to be wiped up or mopped up quickly as they can stain the wood or cause the wood’s stain to discolor.
